How we’ll embrace and celebrate metamorphosis in 2024.

“What the caterpillar calls the end of the world, the master calls a butterfly.” -Richard Bach

Turning the calendar from December to January is supposed to usher in new hope, goals, and possibility. To absolve us of our holiday indulgences and pave the way for commitments to eat better, work out more and grow spiritually. All this to become better versions of ourselves.

But in reality, ringing in the New Year can sometimes feel deflating. Instead of a focus on possibility, it can be a fixation on all that went wrong in the year that’s ending. Devastating global events, divisive politics, destructive weather. Failed promises, fractured relationships and personal disappointments. The worst versions of us on full display. For many, 2023 could not end soon enough.

And yet, when we look at history and cycles within nature, we are reminded that adversity and hardship frequently pour the foundation for coming success. Perhaps no illustration reveals this truth more beautifully than the caterpillar.

Not long after hatching, the caterpillar must shed its hard outer shell. The very skin that kept it safe must be shed to make room for new growth.

Then, in one of the most stunning transformations, a creepy, crawling, hard-shelled, worm-like bug latches onto something firm, hangs upside down, shifts into a cocoon-like state as a chrysalis and spends two weeks doing “nothing.”

Within this chrysalis stage, the old self dies to make space for the completely new way of life. Wings grow. Antennae develop. The entire body radically changes from the inside out. Eventually, it breaks out of the shell, enters back into the light, and takes flight as a new creature: The butterfly.

What is revealed in nature is reflected in our lives.

In my interviews as a podcast host, travels as a speaker and visits as a friend, people share with me how they’ve utilized their challenges to pivot into an unexpected possibility, and how they’ve watched others do the same.

I am thus reminded that we experience our greatest growth and receive our strongest support not during the easy times, but rather during the struggle, because of the change and often because of a forced metamorphosis.

Change can be painful, unwanted, even scary. But it also permits us to break free from who we were, become someone for someone else we may not have even imagined possible and take flight into new life.

One of my greatest transformations began 20 years ago when I broke free from my cocoon, embraced my scars and began sharing my story.

But I didn’t do it alone! With your help, I have grown from occasionally sharing a newsletter read by my mom, dad and wife to a vibrant community of hundreds of thousands of individuals Living Inspired together online daily. Together, my friends, this year we:

  • Shared the Live Inspired message at 112 live speaking events.
  • Dropped 102 episodes of the Inspired podcast.
  • Partnered with five clients in delivering coaching programs to their entire organization.
  • Shot a full-length, feature film that will expand the reach of our story exponentially in 2024.
  • Launched a free, online community of friends seeking comradery and connection with others called Live Inspired Together.
  • Hosted a live event for thousands that beautifully celebrated the stories of those who are On Fire For Good.

And because we will no doubt be reminded in the coming year of the disconnect and despair humanity endures, we’ve put a plan in place to combat the negativity that awaits us in 2024.

At the end of every month we want to elevate the story of one person that is On Fire For Good. Someone who shows up for you and others. Who has inspired you to be the best version of yourself. Someone who despite their own difficult metamorphosis has chosen to beautifully embrace a life of service. Together, we will not just share their story, but we will support their work in little and big ways that uniquely reflect the good they put out into the world.

Do you know someone who deserves to be recognized as being On Fire For Good? Please nominate them here. Hundreds of you already have. You’ve shared stories of resilience, joy, determination and love. Stories of parents and siblings, friends and teachers and coaches and pastors and the list goes on. We can’t wait to share your stories in 2024 as we stay On Fire For Good all year long.

My friends, I am grateful to be on this journey with you. Thank you for joining me in the Live Inspired movement. I wish you and yours a happy New Year and remind you that your best days and greatest impact are in front of you.

Remember, the Master has called us to be butterflies. It’s time to not only take flight, but celebrate those who remind us through their lives that the best is yet to come.

This is your day. Live Inspired.

I have had the honor and privilege of raising monarch caterpillars and watching the transformation into beautiful butterflies for three years. And the transformation is only something that God can do. Thank you for sharing. It is very appropriate for the new year. I can’t wait to see the movie and see what God is going to do in my life in 2024.

Perfect way to start my January 1, 2024! Thank you for continuing to challenge us to go and grow-it’s time to break whatever bonds we have and “live”! Thanks John.
