Craig Groeschel: Winning the War in Your Mind (ep. 556)

Craig Groeschel

Craig Groeschel, New York Times bestselling author and senior pastor of Life.Church joins John O’Leary on the Live Inspired Podcast.

Craig Groeschel is a senior pastor of Life.Church, one of the largest churches in the world and the creator of the free YouVersion Bible App. As a New York Times bestselling author, Craig writes on a wide variety of topics, including dating and marriage, social media, purpose, direction, church leadership, and more.

Today, Craig shares his unlikely journey to discovering his faith, how he remains hopeful in seasons of challenge and how to defy your thinking and change the course of your life for the better, revealing the strategies he’s found that help.

Plus, from his just released book, Winning the War in Your Mind for Teens, Craig shares how we can better support our children and young adults by helping them find freedom from the thoughts holding them back.

My friends, if you or someone you love is seeking to break free from the grip of harmful, destructive thinking, this conversation is for you.

  • As president of his college fraternity, Craig started a bible study as a way to combat the negativity surrounding four members committing grand larceny.
  • Like John meeting Nurse Roy decades after he changed his life, Craig met Mike decades after he gifted him his first bible. Learn more about Nurse Roy here.
  • No good deed goes unrewarded: “There are so many Mikes and Roys right now, faithfully doing what they do and often don’t know just how big of a difference it makes.”
  • “Any story of impact of lots of other people in that story.”
  • January 7, 1996: Forty people gathered in a two-car garage on a snowy Oklahoma City morning and Life.Church was formed.
  • “With growing impact is a growing sense of responsibility to get it right.”
  • Today, Life.Church meets in 44 locations in a dozen states yet.
  • Craig is most thankful for Life.Church creating a free Bible app that has been downloaded more than 500,000,000 times. Get the app here.
  • As a leader, Craig admits that although he’s always been fully in love with his work, his pain and self-doubt prevented him from sometimes being fully engaged.
  • Recognizing that the past few years have been challenging for many, Craig remains hopeful by seeing the power of Jesus is still real to heal, forgive and restore.
  • “Even though there is a lot of darkness in the world, the light still shines bright. Light shines even brighter in the darkness.”
  • “All people end up somewhere in life but few of them end up there on purpose.” – from Craig Groeschel’s book Chazon.
  • “The problem is many bitter people don’t know they’re bitter. Since they’re so convinced they’re right, they can’t see their own wrong in the mirror. The longer the root of their bitterness grows, the more difficult it is to remove.” – from Craig Groeschel’s book Soul Detox.
  • “If we believe that God wants us happy above all else, rather than acknowledge that our goal is to serve God, we wrongly believe that God exists to serve us. God becomes a mean to our ends: happiness.” – from Craig Groeschel’s book The Christian Atheist.
  • “Our lives are always moving in the direction of our strongest thoughts. What we think will shape who we become.” – from Craig Groeschel’s Winning the War in Your Mind and Winning the War in Your Mind for Teens.
  • Remove the lie and replace with truth: Identify the wrong things that are driving the way you think and replace it with what’s true.
  • Write it. Think it. Confess it until you believe it.
  • In raising six kids, Craig and his wife Amy strive to maintain a healthy mixture of grace and truth with an ongoing, open, transparent relationship. Truth without grace leads to rebellion. Grace without truth leads to the license to do anything.
