Cristina Baker: A 60-Second Voice of Hope (ep. 794)

Cristina Baker joins John O’Leary on the Live Inspired Podcast to share her powerful journey from addiction and homelessness to healing, purpose, and hope. Discover how small moments of compassion helped her rewrite her story and inspire millions.

Cristina Baker is a speaker, author, and digital creator whose short videos have brought hope and encouragement to millions. And yet, before she became a voice of inspiration, she was a teen battling addiction, a young mother at rock bottom, and a woman who felt completely alone in the world.

Today, Cristina shares what it was like growing up in a home filled with chaos and instability. She opens up about the choices that led her into a cycle of pain and self-destruction, and how small moments of compassion helped her begin the long road to healing. From a jail cell to a second chance, and eventually to a video that reached millions, Cristina’s story is filled with grit, resilience, and the power of being seen.

My friends, if you’ve ever felt too far gone, too messed up, or too stuck to be used for something good, this conversation is for you. Cristina reminds us that change is possible, even from the lowest points. You’ll leave this episode with a renewed sense of hope, a deeper belief in second chances, and a powerful reminder that your past doesn’t define your future.

SHOW NOTES:

  • Grew up in Bolivia with a Paraguayan mother after her father, a successful and charismatic oil salesman and entertainer, struggled with addiction.
  • “When the party was on, things were okay. But when it ended, life got dark.”
  • Cristina began self-harming and seeking belonging in goth and punk subcultures as a teen.
  • “You’re not worth it.” After an altercation with her stepfather at 15, Cristina moved to Maui to live with her dad, only to discover he was homeless and living in a tent on the beach.
  • Cristina used addiction and chaos as a way to avoid pain and recreate a false sense of safety.
  • Eventually ending up in Pennsylvania, a college basketball coach of Cristina’s brother helped connect her with a couple who became her foster family. That family had no idea what they were signing up for but gave her unconditional love anyway.
  • Despite support, she continued to spiral.  Cristina got pregnant, continued using, and ultimately was arrested which became the turning point of her life.
  • “I didn’t want to die. I felt like I had to.”
  • Cristina says she didn’t need people to tell her she was broken and instead she needed people to love her where she was.
  • “Live an interruptible life” became Cristina’s mantra for staying open to moments of divine or human connection.
  • TikTok Sensation: During the pandemic, she made her first video out of obedience to a dream, praying it would help just one person. The video went viral. She posted another. And another.
  • “Be careful what you come into agreement with.” A reminder that even silence or shame can be forms of dangerous agreement with lies.
  • “You’re not too old, too young, too broken. God can use whatever you offer with open hands.”

You’ll love my conversation with Tiffany Jenkins. Tiffany’s story is raw, emotional, and surprisingly hilarious. Just three months after her first drink, she was on the road to a decade-long opioid addiction. From high school dropout to jail time and eventually becoming a sober mom of three, Tiffany’s journey is a testament to what’s possible after rock bottom. This episode breaks through the stigma of addiction and reminds us that healing is messy, but absolutely worth it. Listen to Tiffany Jenkins on ep. 286 now.
